Internet Safety

As we all know the internet can be a wonderful resource for all children. However, it is a resource that can pose hazards. If a student googles "Legos" but incorrectly types in "legs" a variety of website, some pornographic may appear. Being a teacher and monitoring dozens of children who are online at one time can be daunting. It is wise to begin the school year talking to you students about internet safety. It is also important to educate parents, at curriculum night, about internet safety, too.

Teacher Tools & Tips

Filters, firewalls, activity reports and spyware are technological ways YOU can keep an eye on students.

Filtering program - teacher needs to enter in specific sites or the general TYPE of site that are not appropriate.

Firewalls - protect children from the negative consequences that can occur once they have given out personal information. 55% of students report that they have given out personal information to someone that they met online.

Activity reports & spyware - these allow a teacher/parent to see every site that a child has visited and when it was visited.

Parent cooperation at home.

Be observant, keep computers in places easily seen.

Points to emphasize to children and parents:

  1. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) is a federal law that was created to help protect children. It's designed to prevent anyone from obtaining a child's personal information without a parent's consent. COPPA requires that websites MUST explain their privacy policies and obtain parental consent before collecting ANY of the child's personal information.
  2. Online protection tools are good, but not foolproof. Filtering programs can protect your child from sites from coming in and restrict the amount of information that is being sent online. However, no filtering program can guarantee that they will keep your child away from 100% of the internet risks.
  3. Parents need to set rules about how long their child is on the computer and what sites are NOT appropriate.
